Koh Lanta's East coast is very different from the western beaches with a more traditional lifestyle and the location of many small villages. Tourists in this part of island appear much less frequently, and the local population lives by farming, fishing and cultivation of shrimp. Will pay one day for a trip to the Eastern coast of Lanta, explore The Old Town and move further south for some incredible views.
Koh Lanta Old Town, the former capital of the island is located in the south-eastern part, being the main pier for fishing boats and tour boats. Fifty years ago Chinese and Arabian traders have used this port as a transit point from China to Europe, but since then as appeared freight and ferry pier - Ban Saladan became the capital and main harbour Ko Lanta. The house for the union of Chinese, Muslims and Sea Gypsies - the whole lifestyle is here featured in full harmony. The Old Town, thanks to an old wooden houses along the shore something like a picture of the Wild West.
However, the East coast is slowly changing as tourists tired of the beaches exploring this place, revealing its charm, with temples, incredible restaurants and unique shops. The Old City is also the venue for the annual Lanta Festival which is held in March for more than three days. At this time Lanta Old Town is a pedestrian area with bars, restaurants, hotels, shopping, and many traders who come from all over the island in the former capital of Lanta. In the days of the festival, until late at night there is live music, DJs, cheap food and drinks. |
