Ang Thong Marine National Park Information - Good to Know Ang Тhong Marine National Park is charming Wonderland consisting of green Islands and blue lagoons, mysterious caves and exotic formations of rocks. Approaching Ang Тhong on the boat, as if you fall into any of the dreamy paintings of classical Chinese landscape with an islands rising majestically above the emerald sea is like the 'Mountain Dragon'.

The Park was established on 12 November 1980, as a group of 42 Islands with virgin tropical rain forests, white sand beaches and coral reefs west of Koh Phangan and close to Koh Samui island, the popular tourist destinations of southern Thailand. Ang Тhong means “gold pool”. The archipelago remained untouched for a long time, as it was under the control of the Royal Thai Navy until 1980, and then became a national Park. But nevertheless navy ships often patrol the waters around the islands, as there is often a refuge for pirates. The main activity in the national Park is kayaking, snorkeling and scuba diving.

With the postcard-perfect image of a tropical paradise, the park is normally visited during the day trip from Koh Phangan and you can find this trips at many tour operators in Koh Phangan to discover a natural treasures of Ang Thong National Marine Park. For those who wish to stay overnight, there are simple bungalows and camping tents available for rent at the Park Headquarters on Koh Wua Talab, where a simple restaurant is found as well.

Ang Thon Marine National Park TopographyMost of the Islands are surrounded by wonderful coral reefs, perfectly suited for swimming and snorkelling formed by limestone and rise above the water approximately 100-400 meters. Because limestone can easily change its structure under the influence of weather and chemical factors, many Islands have strange shapes, magic-looking caves and cliffs, and some of the islands similar to the ancient Angkor Wat in Cambodia or Prasart Hin Pimai. Area of the Park is 250 sq km, where only 20 square kilometers are the land. Hundreds of beaches in this archipelago abandoned. Almost all of the Islands except for one not inhabited and is not undeveloped. Koh Palua (Ko Paluay island) is home to a sea Gypsies who still live by fishing. The border of the Park contains approximately 82 % of the total chain of Islands, islets and marine areas. Sea depth is about 10m.

Ang Thon Marine National Park Weather and Climate

Weather in Park defines the monsoon, which brings large waves and storms, approximately 2000 mm. Due to the influence of monsoon all year average temperature is approximately 27 degrees. The best time to visit Ang Thong Marine Park is between February and April. At this time sets a high temperature, but the sea is calm and perfect for sailing enthusiasts.

Ang Thong Marine National Park Information - Good to Know Most of the national Park is on the water, and only 18% on earth, which consists of limestone rocks and a thin layer of soil on which it grows most of the trees. The forest is divided into four types as follows.
1. Dry forest –main plant - Indian oak, Orchid lady's slipper, and Calophyllum.
2. Plants on the beach - tropical almond, beach mahoe, Alexandrian Laurel.
3. Forest on limestone mountains are the main plants - spurge (born of antiquorum Milkweed), crinum Lily.
4. The mangrove trees of the forest – the only plant - small-leaved marsh mangrove tree.

There are wild animals and sea animals type spectacled langur, parrot, Loma, sea turtles, lizards, pythons, monkeys, feeding on crabs, boars, gray bats, dolphins and whales, can be seen on the Islands. Other inhabitants is about 54 kinds of birds, including small white Heron, brahmin background kite, Kulik carrier, Oriental pied crested hornbills, cuckoo lane and sacred. Found only five species of amphibians: common Asian toad, tiger frog, grass frog and tree frog.

Underwater world features sea angels, parrot fish, blue-spotted stingrays, blacktip reef sharks, mackerel, economically important fish and has a beautiful coral reef, sea fans, octagonal corals, giant clams, oysters and normal corals. Marine life of the reefs include butterfly fish, Scaraway fish, Stingray - the sea cat, Groupers and Cowrie shells.

- Wua Talap island is located in Kha Bay. There is a National Park Office. Front office is white and clean beach, apolagise to water games and activities. If you climb up the mountain about 500 meters, the traveler will see all the neighbouring Islands scattered in a sea of chaotic order. One kilometer from the office there is a cave Bua Boke. Inside you can find beautiful stalagmites and stalactites.

To do the tracking, the journey time is approximately 500 meters, and is called the "trail to look-out peak". The route is not easy, the last 60m have the rope. At the top expect a beautiful views of the archipelago.

Also offers two routes for Canoeing: 600m around Phi Island, other 2200m between the beaches of Kha Bay. In addition there are three routes for snorkeling called "underwater world" is the first of about 200 m along the Thaiphlao island, the other 150m of colpomenia Koh Samsao, and third 150m in Kha Bay near Wua Talap island.

- Koh Sam Sao
(three-legged Island) is opposite of Mae Khao. There you can find Wua Talab (Sleeping Cow) and beautiful coral reefs, natural stone bridges in the sea and pure white beach, where you can camp, relax or swim, snorkeling around a coral reef.

- Taiplao and Wua Khuntaeng islands. You will find here a coral reefes and fine snow-white beaches.

Tha-le Nai (Inner Sea) or Emerald Lake in the Mountain is situated at Ko Mae Ko (Ko Mae Ko) (Mother Island). It is the big natural reservoir surrounded with rock formation consisting from limestone. The area has the underwater cave connected with the sea by an underground tunnel. To reach an emerald lake, you need to make a forty minute climb that requires a lot of effort, but you will be rewarded with a Grand view of the entire Park.

Ang Thong Marine National Park Information - Good to Know There is no regular boat service to/from Ang Thong Marine Park, the only way to get there is take a day tour. There are no boat tours from Surathani or Koh Tao island. Only day tours to Angthong Marine Park are from Koh Phangan island and Koh Samui island. Only way to book the bungalow is through the National Marine Park site www.dnp.go.th

If you wish to stay over night, camping or rent a tent, there is no reservation needed. Rent of tent for 2 person is 250 thb per person per night include torch, clean sleeping bag, mosquito net and tent. There is a restaurant at the park main island is open daily 8 am till 10 pm. Food is fresh and daily served. Electric is available only 6 pm till 10 pm. Free wifi is available on Koh Whua Talap island (at and around restaurant) as well as mobile signal (3G) and land line also work well.

National marine Park Ang Thong is located in Ang Thong district of Koh Samui area, Surat Thani province. The Park area lies 35km to the South West of Samui island, and 80 km with in Muang district, Surat Thani province.
